November R&M Events

Rhythm & Muse Poetry Workshop at the Stanley Picker Gallery

Saturday 15 Nov 2014, 11am-1pm
Inspired by Laura Oldfied Ford Seroxat, Smirnoff, THC

Free Event / Booking Advised

The Stanley Picker Gallery and Rhythm & Muse invite you to participate in a special poetry and creative writing workshop inspired by Seroxat, Smirnoff, THC, an exciting new exhibition of drawing, painting, text and photographic artworks by psychogeographer, zine-maker and Stanley Picker Fellow in Fine Art Laura Oldfield Ford. The session will be led by Alison Hill and Natalie Kay.

Taking suburban South West London as a starting point Seroxat, Smirnoff, THC addresses issues surrounding contested space, landscape, architecture and memory, reworking the ‘dérive’ or drift as a subjective process of mapping territory along the lines of social antagonism. Navigation of the exhibition will in turn form the starting point of the Rhythm & Muse poetic explorations, and complement the current National Poetry Day theme ‘Remember’.

All are welcome but places are limited, so booking is advised via email n.kay@kingston.ac.uk or telephone 020 8417 4074.

Rhythm & Muse returns to the Ram Jam Club on Thursday 27 November for its penultimate event there with two fine voices – guest poet Carolyn O’Connell and singer-songwriter Hannah Rose Tristram, plus open mic.  All welcome, the more the merrier for our last-but-one R&M at the Ram Jam!

Singer, dancer and musician, Hannah Rose Tristram has been touring internationally with world music choirs Village Harmony and Northern Harmony from the age of ten. She is a charismatic accordionist, flautist, singer and poet and a popular performer at Rhythm & Muse.

Hannah Rose brings people together in song through leading Community Choirs in London and Sussex, and delivering music and singing workshops worldwide.

She also empowers people through individual Vocal Coaching and Vocal Therapy, and teaches Kripalu Yoga.

Carolyn O’Connell is a local poet who regularly attends Rhythm & Muse and was the first to read at the open mic at the first R&M in 2007.

With liberal use of colour, and a willingness to tackle a full range of emotions; joy, nostalgia, fear, horror and regret, Carolyn O’Connell’s well-crafted poetry collection reflects on the domestic, delights in the exotic, and bravely confronts uncomfortable aspects of war with a sincere and honest empathy.

Her new collection Timelines (September 2014) is published by Indigo Dreams – more info at http://www.indigodreamsbookshop.com/#/carolyn-oconnell/4586178898
